    module 2
    The sound /ʌ/

    Introduction

Text taken from the 2011 poem “New Math” by Nikki Grimes from: Planet Middle School .(Bloomsbury USA, 2011), as found on www.poetryfoundation.org.

Read the short children’s poem a few times, focusing on all the words that you would say contain the same vowel sound as the Dutch word ‘nut’.

If you like, you can copy-paste the poem into your Pronunciation  Portfolio to underline all the words that have this vowel in them.

Once you think you have found all those words, listen to recording 2a to find out which words you should have identified.

Watch the instruction video on the next page after you have listened to the recording.

    New Math

    BY NIKKI GRIMES

    Up till now,

    the math of my life

    has been pretty simple:

    friends

    plus family

    plus sports.

    What more

    could I ask for, right?

    But lately,

    my outside has been changing

and my inside keeps telling me

    more is on the way.

    Trouble is,

    I'm not sure

    I'm ready.
