    Exercise 4.4

Now, play recording 4b. You will hear both speakers from the video again, in random order. You will hear six different fragments in total. For each fragment you hear, write down whether you hear the Dutch native speaker or the English native speaker. Write down D for Dutch and E for English.

    Exercise 4.5

    Based on: Hermans, (2018)

Now that you have trained your ear for the difference between English /ae/ and Dutch /e/, it is time to watch the next video, but with your sound switched off.

You will hear the Dutch native speaker first, and the English native speaker second.

Look at the movements of the jaw that both speakers make and write down in your Pronunciation Portfolio as precisely as you can what that movement looks like.

To help you, the two fragments will be played in slow motion a second time, with the Dutch speaker first and the English speaker second.

Once you have written down what the difference in jaw movement is, switch your sound back on, replay the video and listen closely to hear the difference you have detected. Then, watch instruction video 2 on the next page to hear the difference explained.
